How this calculator works

  • Calculate Income Tax on salary after optional pension contributions (see Income Tax calculator).
  • Estimate employee National Insurance using annual Primary Threshold and Upper Earnings Limit from the data file.
  • Main NI rate applies between the Primary Threshold and Upper Earnings Limit; a lower rate applies above the UEL.
  • Take-home = gross − Income Tax − employee NI − pension contribution.
  • Real PAYE NI is calculated per pay period; annual banding is an approximation.

NI ≈ (min(salary, UEL) − PT) × main rate + max(0, salary − UEL) × upper rate, when salary > PT. Net = gross − tax − NI − pension.

Frequently asked questions

Is employer National Insurance deducted from my pay?

No. Employer NI is paid by the employer on top of your gross pay. This calculator only estimates employee NI.

Are student loan repayments included?

Not yet. Student loan plans use separate thresholds and rates. Deduct them separately if they apply.

How are pension contributions treated?

We reduce taxable income by the annual contribution you enter (relief-at-source style simplification). Salary sacrifice can also change NI — that full treatment is not modelled.

Why doesn’t this match my payslip exactly?

Payslips use tax codes, pay-period NI tables, benefits, and year-to-date adjustments. Treat this as a planning estimate.

Which NI category is assumed?

Category A (most employees). Other letters (for example reduced rate or deferment) are not modelled.

Sources and disclaimer

Estimates only — not financial advice. England, Northern Ireland and Wales rules only (Scotland has different income tax bands). Student loan, marriage allowance, Blind Person’s Allowance, temporary tax codes, and payroll timing are not modelled. Verify against HMRC / GOV.UK and your payslip.
